Description
Experience firsthand the impact of education and educational policy on social change in Chile and Argentina. Both countries are known for their high educational levels, sustained governmental engagement in educational policymaking and implementation, and a solid cadre of committed educators. Innovative approaches to educational delivery and nonformal instructional networks, ranging from privatization to popular educational programs, also flourish here. Today, the forces of globalization, on the one hand, and local and ethnic voices, on the other, present new challenges, especially in regard to meeting the needs of marginal and/or disenfranchised sectors of the population.
Highlights
Based in Santiago, Chile, participants engage in themes such as education and equity, popular education, intercultural education, and education and human rights. Visits to Buenos Aires, Argentina, and a Mapuche community in southern Chile provide opportunities to compare differing approaches. A four-week Independent Study Project is a hallmark of SIT Study Abroad programs.
