interstudy: University of St. Andrews - Scotland
  Scotland

Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: Middle September - Late January / Late January - Late May

Description: The University was founded in 1413, making it the oldest in Scotland and the third oldest in the United Kingdom. The University of St. Andrews is closely integrated within the town of St. Andrews. The University buildings, ranging from the original 15th Century Collegiate church building to the modern buildings at North Haugh which house the Physical and Mathematical Sciences including Computer Science, are all within walking distance of each other. St. Andrews has an international reputation for teaching and research in the humanities and its focus on the sciences is equally strong. It is well known for its range of courses from Medieval History to Internet Computing. The University population, both students and staff, numbers around 6,000, and because of this, local and university events blend to offer a rich cultural and social life for all. Students at St. Andrews enjoy the variety of musical options ranging from rock to folk to classical, all performed at clubs and other venues in the area. The golf courses of St. Andrews are famous throughout the world, and as a result the town has grown to accommodate the international tastes of its visitors.

St. Andrews is small, beautiful and historic. It has a population of 16,000, is situated on its own sheltered bay along the Fife coast, and is full of old buildings, city walls, shops and houses dating back as far as the 6th Century AD. With the Grampian mountains as a backdrop, skiing at Glenshee or the Cairngorms is a short drive away. St. Andrews commands splendid views of the Angus coast and hills and while it is picturesque and remote from the bustle of industrial Scotland, it is a mere 45 miles north of Edinburgh and 13 miles south of Dundee. It is connected to larger cities by excellent road and train connections. St. Andrews is the ideal location for the student seeking to become quickly and easily part of a community: both that of the university and St. Andrews itself.
