In this program, students gain insight into the challenges facing a traditional society affected by an international tourist population and increasing development. The program is based in Bali, a microcosm of the contending forces and contradictions at play throughout Indonesia. The 13,000-island nation of Indonesia has historically attracted an array of traders, colonizers, and settlers from throughout the world and the nation's long history of adaptation and change continues today as tourism and global marketplace influences dramatically alter Indonesia's natural and cultural landscapes.
A predominantly Hindu island in an otherwise Muslim nation, Bali offers a blend of religious and cultural influences, a rich artistic heritage, and a window into the continued importance of religion in Balinese daily life. Students examine the interaction between traditional Balinese arts and culture and the economic and political spheres of society.
Highlights:
Seven-week homestay in Bedulu. Educational excursions to historic and cultural sites, temple festivals, and other religious rituals, performances, and local ceremonies in Tabanan, Denpasar, and Ubud; excursions to other parts of Bali.
