Leiden University is the oldest university in the Netherlands. It was founded in 1575, as a gift from William of Orange to the citizens of Leiden. Leiden Law School, the largest in the Netherlands, is located in a beautifully renovated national monument in the historic heart of the city. Leiden Law School is renowned in a number of fields including Public International Law, European Business Law, International Tax Law, and Air and Space Law. In addition, Leiden Law School has established the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies , located in a 400-year old building at Leiden University's Campus The Hague.
Leiden's summer course on International Criminal Law is meant for students who want to deepen their knowledge on international criminal law in a brief period of time. Professionals from various international courts and tribunals, such as the International Criminal Court (ICC), the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and influential scholars contribute to this course.
This course is offered at the Grotius Centre at The Hague campus. The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies is a The Hague based centre of Leiden University, focusing on all aspects of international law. At the Grotius Centre, the expertise of Leiden University's Faculty of Law is combined with the position of The Hague as the City of Peace and Justice.
Highlights:
Special lectures by practitioners of the tribunals.
Visits to the Peace Palace, the ICC and the ICTY, all located in The Hague.
Professionals from various international courts and tribunals, such as the ICC and the ICTY, and influential scholars will be contributing to this course. Lectures will be given on various (substantive and procedural) topics of international criminal law, such as International Courts and Tribunals, General Principles of Criminal Law, the ICC & Complementarity, Crimes against Humanity, War Crimes and the Role of Victims.
Lectures will be held in French or English and simultaneous translation will be provided throughout the summer school. There will also be a series of Cross Examination Exercises built into the curriculum.
