Description
Denmark is a world leader in epidemiology research, largely because of the civil register that tracks citizens over their lifetimes for statistical purposes; not surprisingly the European headquarters of the World Health Organization is located in Copenhagen. Health care provision in Denmark and the rest of northern Europe is publicly funded through taxes or employers-- meaning that every citizen has free access to a full range of health services. With that said, European health care systems are currently facing a number of issues: how to ensure quality health care services for all, how to keep up with demand, and how to recruit and retain health care professionals. For this reason, Denmark is a great place to study crucial political issues in health care, and the Public Health program will ensure to offer you just that!
Highlights
Denmark provides a laboratory for exploring public health issues much different from the US. Come see what these issues look like from a social welfare state with free health care and very high taxes. The program aims:

* To provide a Northern European perspective on the salient aspects of public health like pre-natal care, immunization, prevention, food safety, health promotion
* To help you understand the complex challenges of health policy making, prioritization, and health economics
* To advance your ability to derive comparative insights from analysis of different national health care systems
* To sensitize you to the political, social, economic, and moral issues involved in different models underlying modern health care systems.

Students in this program will participate in two course integrated study tours. One short study in Denmark at the beginning of the semester and a longer European study tour to Helsinki-Tallin.
