Tyler Crafts Workshop in Scotland
- Multi-Country
  Scotland

Term: Summer
Dates: typically early June to early July (program runs every other summer)

Description: The Tyler Art Workshop in Scotland is a four-week summer studio art program in which students experience different elements of Scotland's culture in urban and rural environments. The program is offered by the Crafts Department, Tyler School of Art, in conjunction with the Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Scotland. The course's structure is directed towards studio art majors with one year of studio experience beyond the freshman level. The program emphasizes the creation of artwork based on the students cross-cultural experiences during the program. Access to Scottish artist/educators, travel and museum visits, as well as lectures and slide presentations, supplement the curriculum.

Highlights: Participants fly into Glasgow, Scotland and travel to the small fishing village of Arbroath on the east coast of Scotland. For twelve days, students live and work at the Hospitalfield House, which has a rich history with portions of the original house dating back to the 14th century. It currently functions as an artist residency, studio and museum. Throughout this time, students explore the surrounding geography and history through day trips and spend time working in the art studios at Hospitalfield. Field trips to Edinburgh, Arbroath's fishing harbor, a 13th century Abbey ruin, and Pictish stone sites, among others, allow time for students to photograph, sketch and conduct research. The Hospitalfield Estate is itself a living museum with examples of excellent Scottish painting, sculpture and architectural ornamentation.

After the time at Hospitalfield, students spend five days on the Isle of Harris, a remote island in the Scottish Highlands with a beautiful and rugged landscape, off of the west coast of Scotland. During the time in Harris, students explore the beauty of the natural landscape while experiencing firsthand the culture of rural Scotland. Field trips are also planned during this time for photographing, drawing and painting. While on the Isle of Harris, students stay at a private hostel.

Students spend the final part of the program working at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA). While at GSA, students analyze and develop the visual information collected during the program and work towards their final art project. During this period, students have the opportunity to work in drawing, painting, photography, 3-D and digital media. In addition to working in the studios at the GSA, the group takes trips to local museums and historic sites.
